The Center on Global Energy Policy (CGEP) at Columbia SIPA is seeking an experienced and driven Communications Manager to support CGEP’s communications team. Reporting to the Director of Communications and Digital Media, the Communications Manager will help develop and execute communications strategies to position CGEP as a leading resource for global energy policy analysis.

Key Responsibilities

Content Creation

Craft and ensure high quality of multimedia content including research summaries, email announcements, press releases, messaging docs, newsletters, website content, op-eds, and other written materials for external and internal audiences.

Social Media

Manage social media channels, carrying through key messages and insights to establish CGEP as a leading online voice in the energy policy space. Curate and schedule content daily to drive engagement. Explore and execute new social media strategies to grow CGEP’s audience.

Podcast Production

Support production and dissemination of the Columbia Energy Exchange podcast series. Ideate and book guests, help coordinate research and prep, draft email announcements and summaries of episodes, and be the point person to release weekly episodes.

Document Production

Drive forward design and document production for CGEP research products and ad hoc projects. Be the main point of contact for design vendors, manage timelines and maintain quality control over production.

Media Relations

Build and strengthen media relations with top tier energy, business, political and trade media (across print, digital and broadcast outlets). Monitor industry and political news cycles and proactively pitch and secure coverage of CGEP research, events, podcasts, programs and other projects. Schedule and prep media interviews with CGEP scholars and track total media coverage.

Additional Projects

In coordination with the Director of Communications and other CGEP leadership, support special projects across the organization.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field, or the equivalent combination of training and experience. At least three years of directly relevant experience with developing and managing strategic communications, media relations, and marketing programs to advance an organization's mission, brand and goals.

Additional Position-Specific Qualifications

Experience planning and writing newsletters, press releases, briefing memos, and other print materials.

Experience managing digital elements of campaigns and initiatives, including website content, social media, and email management. Experience pitching and securing media in top-tier print, digital and broadcast outlets; building relationships with beat reporters and editors. Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills. Strong project management skills; resourceful and at ease working in fast-paced environments and with small teams. Self-reliant but able to ask questions.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters in Communications; 4+ years of directly related experience. Previous experience in the energy and/or environment sector. Previous experience at an academic institution, think tank or research institution. Website, graphic design, coding experience.
