The Center on Global Energy Policy (CGEP) at Columbia SIPA seeks a Director of Communications. Reporting to the Executive Director of Strategy and Operations, the Director of Communications will be the lead strategist for developing, articulating, and messaging CGEP, its research, events, experts and insights to internal and external audiences.

The purpose of this multifaceted role will be instrumental in and a driving force for maintaining and raising the Center’s profile as a global leader in energy policy research, engagement and training of the next generation. The incumbent’s communication and marketing efforts will need to showcase the Center’s core strengths and enhance its ability to enable public and private sector leaders to make more informed choices about the world’s most pressing energy issues.

The Director of Communications is an integral part of all CGEP operations and must be exceptionally organized and capable of working with stakeholders across CGEP and the Columbia and international energy communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • In alignment with senior CGEP leadership, lead the development and implementation of an integrated strategic communications plan to support CGEP’s communications and engagement objectives, including external communications and content creation, digital and social media, media relations, event support, etc.
  • Establish metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of activities in achieving targeted goals.
  • Lead and mentor junior staff in a growing communications department.
  • Manage and develop relationships with key print, digital and broadcast media to promote and secure CGEP research, experts, events, programs and insights in top-tier outlets and stories.
  • Ensure organizational communication and brand consistency across all CGEP materials and communications. Set the tone and serve as key owner of the organization's website and social media presence. Write and edit content and oversee design and production of public-facing materials, including website pages and features, print materials, newsletters, social media content, op-eds, and other communications and marketing collateral.
  • Manage and produce CGEP’s weekly podcast series: Identify and secure top-tier guests; craft and release podcast announcements and social media content; ideate new channels for audience engagement; explore new partnership opportunities.
  • Explore and develop new ways to strengthen CGEP’s brand identity and engagement with key stakeholder audiences.
  • Build relationships and work collaboratively with University communications teams; ideate and pursue opportunities for partnership.
  • Manage relationships with key vendors for graphic design, marketing materials, website, podcast, etc.
  • Assist in special projects.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in training and experience. Minimum 5-7 years of experience developing and managing a comprehensive, strategic communications, media relations, and marketing program to advance an organization's mission, brand and goals. Experience planning, writing, editing, and producing newsletters, press releases, reports, briefing memos, marketing collateral, and other print materials. Experience managing digital elements of campaigns and initiatives, including website content, social media, and email management. Experience pitching and securing media in top-tier print, digital and broadcast outlets; building relationships with beat reporters and editors. Experience overseeing staff. Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills. Experience interacting effectively with senior leaders and international stakeholders. Strong project management skills; ability to work effectively under tight deadlines, multi-task, be self-reliant but also know when to ask questions.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in relevant field (communications, journalism, public policy, etc.) Previous experience in the energy and/or environment sector. Previous experience at an academic institution, think tank or research institution. Website, graphic design, coding experience. Established relationships with top-tier national and international media covering the energy, environment and climate, geopolitics, business and economics beats.
