Dean of Science of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Thomas Alva Edison/Con Ed Professor Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences
PETER B. de MENOCAL is Dean of Science for the Faculty of Arts & Sciences at Columbia University responsible for 240 faculty across nine science departments. He is Thomas Alva Edison/Con Edison Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
He is a marine geologist and paleoclimate scientist at Columbia’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, the nation’s largest and top-ranked Earth Science research institute. With over 100 published research papers and many book chapters, his research uses geochemical analyses of ocean sediments to past ocean and climate change and their human impacts.
In 2015 he founded Columbia’s Center for Climate & Life, a research team representing over 120 climate and life system scientists accelerating our understanding of climate impacts on life’s essentials – food, water, shelter, health, and energy.
He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, an AGU Emiliani Lecturer, recipient of the Lenfest Columbia Distinguished Faculty award. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from St. Lawrence University in 2009.
