Student Roundtable and Lunch with Felipe Bayón

Past Event

May 4, 2023

12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

This roundtable is open only to currently-enrolled Columbia University students.

Please join the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia SIPA for a student-only lunch and roundtable discussion with Felipe Bayón, former CEO of Ecopetrol, about the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition for state-owned oil companies. Lunch will be provided.

Mr. Bayón will talk about the company’s decarbonization strategy: the company’s entry into renewable energies, hydrogen, natural climate solutions, and CCUS (carbon capture, utilization and storage) and the diversification of the company’s energy portfolio with the acquisition of the controlling stake (51.4%) in Interconexión Eléctrica S.A. (ISA), Latin America’s largest power transmission company.

Biography

Felipe Bayón was the CEO of Ecopetrol for more than 5 years until he stepped down in March of 2023. He has over 31 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. Prior to being CEO, he was the company’s COO. Mr. Bayón also worked at BP for 20 years as senior vice president of BP America and head of its global deep-water response. From 2005-2010, he was the regional president of BP Southern Cone (South America), and before 2005 he worked in BP’s headquarters as chief of staff to the CEO and the head of the executive office for exploration and production. He began his career in BP Colombia in 1995 as a project engineer, where he held various positions until becoming vice president of operations in Colombia. Mr. Bayón holds a degree in mechanical engineering from Universidad de los Andes. He has been a member of different platforms of the World Economic Forum like the Oil and Gas Governors community, in topics such as energy transition, sustainability and technology.
