Student Roundtable and Lunch with Nigel Topping

Past Event

February 6, 2024

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm est

This roundtable is open only to currently enrolled Columbia University students.

Please join the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia SIPA for a student-only lunch and roundtable with CGEP Distinguished Visiting Fellow, Nigel Topping, Founder of Ambition Loop and UN Climate Change High-Level Action Champion COP26. The discussion will be moderated by Gautam Jain, Senior Research Scholar at the Center on Global Energy Policy, at Columbia SIPA.

Mr. Topping will discuss how the conversation on mobilizing international climate finance has evolved since COP26, covering the launch of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), which he confounded with Mark Carney, the commissioning of the Stern Songwe report on Financing Climate Action, and work on accelerating actual investment pipelines. Beyond multilateral development bank reform, what other practical changes are needed to reach the $2.4 trillion per year needed in emerging markets and developing economies?

Biography

Nigel Topping, CMG was appointed by the UK Prime Minister as UN Climate Change High Level Champion for COP26.  In this role  Topping mobilizes the global private sector and local government to take bold action on climate change, launching the Race To Zero and Race To Resilience campaigns and, with Mark Carney, the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero. He is now a global advisor to governments, financial institutions, and private companies on climate and industrial strategy.  He is a non-executive director of the UK Infrastructure Bank, an honorary professor of economics at Exeter University, and was awarded the honor of CMG in Queen Elizabeth’s final honors list in 2022. Topping read mathematics at St Johns and won two rugby blues, before entering a career in the manufacturing industry.
